Out-of-box experience and Installation
Since the wording on the DVD case explicitly read “1 user 1 Mac” the first thing we tested on our MacBook Pro was installing Office under one user account and then trying to run it under a newly created one.
This worked perfectly and doesn’t seem to be against the EULA as only a single user on the licensed hardware was using the software at any given time.
The installer reported that office needs 1.65GB of hard drive space for a full install.
This includes Microsoft’s remote desktop application as well as Microsoft Messenger. By default these are installed but you can choose to not install these apps if you don’t want them polluting your Mac.
Suite-wide issues
The first thing you’ll notice on the 1920×1200 display of the 17” MacBook Pro is that the pinch to zoom gesture doesn’t work.
For a program typically associated with Windows that has gone to such lengths to work the “Mac way” this seems like a pretty large oversight.
An oft-requested Windows-centric feature that’s made it into Office for Mac 2011 is Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros.
While we weren’t able to test VBA macros, Microsoft promises that you’ll be able to do everything you were able to in Office 2004 and they also say that macros are available across all versions of the Office for Mac 2011 suite.
Macworld have also reported positive results in their testing of Office for Mac 2011‘s macros in Excel.
While macro support is back in Office for Mac 2011, it didn’t come at the cost of the Mac-specific Automator workflows. Microsoft also provides a bunch of example Automator workflows along with the suite.
These include scripts such as creating an Excel spreadsheet populated with a listing of files and sub-directories from a particular directory.
Excel
Excel 2011 includes a number of new features to help you make your spreadsheet more attractive.
Quick conditional formats, as well as in-cell charts called sparklines let you visualise data faster. An example of sparklines is attached in the image galleries in the sidebar of this article.
This screenshot was taken from the online version of Excel available through SkyDrive. While you can’t add or remove sparklines or conditional formats when editing files online you can interact with them.
While it’s great that you’re able to apply conditional formatting to a selection of data from a list of templates, some of the templates are a little counter-intuitive.
For instance, if you want to indicate whether a value has increased between one period and the next you can’t seem to just select the relevant range and apply the format that displays an up arrow, down arrow, or dash before the value.
Word
Microsoft Word retains the notebook layout view from Office for Mac 2008 in addition to all the other features you’ve come to expect from Microsoft’s word processor.
An interesting difference between Mac and Windows versions of Word is that if you select text and hit the delete key (equivalent to the PC backspace) it deletes any preceding space as well.
PowerPoint
Office for Mac 2011’s presentation package has received few pretty cool new features. The most striking is probably the new 3D order arranging tool.
When you click the “Arrange” button the slide is decomposed into its various layers and rendered in 3D. From here you can click and drag to re-arrange the order in which objects lie on top of one another in the slide.
You can broadcast your presentation over the web to anyone with a browser as well. Microsoft does try to punt Silverlight while the slideshow loads, but it seems to display on browsers in Ubuntu without having Microsoft’s “web application framework” installed.
Outlook
While many welcome the abandonment of Entourage for Outlook, it means that the Home & Student edition of Office for Mac no longer comes with an email client.
Most Mac users probably use the mail application that comes with OS X by default anyway, but there are apparently some fans of Entourage out there. Our condolences to you, but the tribe has spoken.
There is one major snag in Outlook for Mac that might be a deal-breaker for some: It doesn’t sync with iCal, the built-in calendar application on Macs.
Outlook is able to synchronise your contacts to and from your iPhone and other services, but is unable to do the same for your calendar.
There’s also no support for remote calendar syncing to third party services like Google, but this would be mostly solved with the ability to sync to iCal.
In a conversation on Twitter with fellow tech journo Brett Haggard, the Lead Program Manager of Microsoft Outlook for Mac, Andy Ruff said, “@Brettski that will be fixed in an upcoming update #fail.”
Conclusion
Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 is a marked improvement on the 2008 version. It’s not without shortcomings but you’d be hard-pressed to find a better productivity suite.
Some might miss having a Microsoft mail client in the Home & Student edition, but having some parity in the pricing between the Mac and Windows versions of Office will certainly appeal to the majority of Mac users.
